Days after the “City of Yes” housing plan passed the City Council, seven mayoral candidates spent Saturday afternoon talking about the future of housing in the city at the West Side Tenants Conference Mayoral Forum on Housing at Fordham Law School on the Upper West Side.
The panel included six Democratic candidates — City Comptroller Brad Lander, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, State Sen. Jessica Ramos, former Comptroller Scott Stringer and former Assemblyman Michael Blake — as well as one independent candidate, attorney Jim Walden.
Mayor Eric Adams was not among them.
In addition to “City of Yes,” key topics included housing affordability, calls for a citywide rent freeze and short-term rentals.
“I have stood on my own two feet in housing court with my mother to keep her home and prevent eviction. So, as mayor of this city, I will appoint members of the Rent Guidelines Board that will be putting our renters first,” Myrie said.
“In my career, working with many of you, I have testified year in and year out for the last many decades to freeze the rent of the Rent Guidelines Board. I have been there side by side with you more than anyone on this platform today,” Stringer said.
The round-robin style forum was moderated by Politico reporter Jeff Coltin and gave each candidate a chance to speak.
The event marked the fourth mayoral candidates forum to be held so far this election cycle.
The Democratic mayoral primary is scheduled to take place in June 2025.
