The shooting happened just 20 minutes after former FBI official Tom Donlon was sworn in as interim Police Commissioner following the resignation of Edward Caban.

According to the NYPD, officers were let into the apartment on East 21st Street near Dorchester Road. When they entered the bathroom, they discovered a man, fully clothed, hiding in the bathtub. Police say officers told the man several times to get out of the tub and show his hands but he refused.

That’s when officers say they realized Jean Baptiste was armed with a knife. A police sergeant took out a taser and attempted to use it on Jean Baptiste, but it did not work, the NYPD said.

“At that point, the man jumped out of the tub and advanced on the officers,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey said. “And at least three officers fired their weapons an unknown amount of times at this time.”

Jean Baptiste had one prior arrest in 2015 for reckless endangerment and an open and active bench warrant from 2022.

According to police, Jean Baptiste was in a romantic relationship with one of the stabbing victims. The victims include a 66-year-old and 54-year-old woman, as well as a 24-year-old man.

Jean Baptiste was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Police officials said as Jean Baptiste was being taken out of the apartment building on a stretcher, people threw bottles at NYPD officers.

One officer was hit in the head and treated at a nearby hospital, according to police.
