A new law barring the sale of “ghost plates” in New York state took effect Sunday.
“Ghost plates” are obscured or unreadable license plates drivers use to bypass tolls. They cost the MTA about $50 million every year, according to transit agency estimates.
The MTA and NYPD have performed several crackdowns on toll evaders and ghost cars since May in an attempt to curtail the practice.
However, some officials say the new law might not do enough.
Earlier this month, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine released a report that noted websites, including Craigslist and TikTok, are still selling “ghost plates” online.
