The city is launching Open Streets sites outside more than 70 schools across the five boroughs, officials said Thursday.

Participating schools will be able to temporarily close adjacent streets to vehicles for drop-off, pick-up, recess and outdoor learning, the city’s Department of Transportation said.

“The streets have historically been a place for children to play and socialize — and through our Open Streets program, we have created a new framework to give this space back to our school children to safely learn, develop new skills, and make pick-ups and drop-offs much easier for parents and guardians,” DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement.

The following schools will participate in the Open Streets program, the DOT said:

The program, which began during the pandemic, was codified into law earlier this year.

“Applications for 2025 Open Streets will open in October and will include further details about how schools can apply for and receive funding,” the DOT said.
