Ten days after President Joe Biden stepped down from his candidacy and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, the United Auto Workers union said it will endorse her.

The union, which had previously endorsed President Biden’s bid for reelection, said the Harris campaign was historic and “builds on the Biden-Harris administration’s proven track record of standing with the UAW and delivering major gains for the working class.

The endorsement comes as the Harris' campaign is set to visit Detroit next week to rally with UAW members. The vice president is set to meet with union members and leaders "to hear about the issues that matter to Michigan workers," according to the UAW.

“Our job in this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her proven track record of delivering for the working class,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in a statement.

The endorsement could prove crucial in Michigan, a must-win battleground state for both parties.

Last year, President Biden became the first sitting president to picket with union workers during the UAW’s strike against the Big Three Detroit automakers.

“We stand at a crossroads in this country,” Fain said. “We can put a billionaire back in office who stands against everything our union stands for, or we can elect Kamala Harris who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our war on corporate greed.”

Fain called on the UAW’s 1 million active and retired members to elect Harris this November.

The UAW joins several of the country’s largest unions in endorsing Harris for President. In the week following Biden’s announcement that he was stepping down, the American Federation of Teachers, the Communications Workers of America, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees endorsed the Harris campaign.
