Several price changes for transit and city services have taken effect.

Water service rates went up 8.5% Monday, marking the largest increase in more than a decade. The increase works out to about $100 a year for the average homeowner.

A 15% fare hike for New Jersey Transit also kicks into effect. The increase comes after weeks of issues have plagued Amtrak and NJ Transit riders coming into and leaving Penn Station.

The fare hike is intended to help close a more than $100 million budget gap for the upcoming fiscal year, agency officials said.

The fare for a single ride on the AirTrain to and from John F. Kennedy International Airport, meanwhile, is being cut in half for the summer.

It has been reduced from $8.50 to $4.25 through Labor Day.
