For the fifth consecutive year, several beach blocks in the Rockaways will be closed this summer as shoreline construction continues.

According to the New York City Parks Department, about 20 blocks spanning from Beach 106th Street to Beach 126th Street will be inaccessible for swimming due to ongoing construction work.

The closures will be rolling and as work is completed over the summer, access will be expanded to more of the beach, the Parks Department said.

These closures are in line with the U.S. Army Corps' Atlantic Shorefront Resiliency Project, which aims to fortify the shoreline with the construction of 19 new stone groin structures. These structures are designed to stabilize the shoreline and replenish the beach while also expanding beach access.

The project—which began in the summer of 2020 and will continue through 2026—has already allowed swimming areas around Beach 30th Street, which had been closed for years, to reopen, according to the Parks Department.

The entire Rockaway boardwalk will remain accessible throughout the summer, the Parks Department said. Concession stands at Beach 17th Street, Beach 86th Street, Beach 97th Street, and Beach 106th Street will also continue operations.
