The city saw a drop in overall crime in January, but transit crime spiked up year over year, NYPD data released Monday shows.

The city’s overall crime index decreased by 2.9% last month compared to January of last year, with drops in murder, reported rape, felony assault, burglary and grand larceny auto, the NYPD said.

Citywide, the NYPD recorded a 25% drop in murders year over year, from 36 to 27; a 24.4% drop in reported rapes, from 135 to 102; a 19.8% drop in burglaries, from 1,328 to 1,065; a 3.8% drop in grand larcenies auto, from 1,224 to 1,178; and a 1.5% drop in felony assaults, from 2,100 to 2,068.

Data shows there was also a 10.8% drop in shooting incidents throughout the city year over year, with 66 shootings logged last month compared to 74 last January.

Transit crime, however, was up by 46.1% year over year, with 222 crimes recorded last month compared to 152 in January of last year, data shows.

In a news release, the NYPD said “uniformed presence in the subway system was expanded in hot-spot areas and will be supported further over the coming weeks using a combination of Transit Bureau personnel and officers usually assigned to administrative duties department-wide.”

“In addition to violent crime, officers will continue to focus on quality-of-life offenses, including fare evasion,” the department added.

The city also saw a 5.4% increase in robberies year over year, from 1,345 to 1,417 and a 0.4% increase in grand larcenies, with 4,056 thefts recorded last month compared to 4,041 in January 2023.

Those upticks were “fueled by organized pickpocket teams,” as well as thieves that “target inebriated or sleeping victims in the subway system,” the NYPD said.

Hate crimes, meanwhile, were up by 36% year over year, with 45 hate crimes logged last month compared to 33 in January of last year, data shows. Thirty-one of the 45 incidents were anti-Jewish incidents, according to the data.
