Two people are dead after a vehicle headed the wrong way on the Whitestone Expressway in Queens collided with another car early Thursday morning, police said.

Authorities said the fatal crash took place just after 2:15 a.m. when a black Honda Pilot traveling in the wrong direction in the southbound expressway lanes collided with another Honda.

The operator of the car traveling in the correct direction, a 45-year-old man, was pronounced dead on arrival by emergency responders, police said.

A 25-year-old man inside the Honda Pilot traveling in the wrong direction was also pronounced dead on arrival.

Two people inside the wrong-way Honda Pilot were also injured: a 35-year-old woman, who was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens in critical condition, and a 26-year-old man, who was also taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens in stable condition.

Police said it is unclear who was behind the wheel of the Honda driving in the wrong direction as well as why the vehicle was headed the wrong way.

The incident forced police to close all southbound lanes of the Whitestone Expressway near College Point Boulevard for hours, causing major traffic delays to start the day. Around 8 a.m., all southbound lanes were reopened.
