The city will open an arrival center for asylum seekers in Carnegie Hill, Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday.
The center — the 12th "Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center" operated by the city — will be located at 1760 Third Ave., near East 97th Street, in Manhattan, Adams said in a press release.
The center will provide services to more than 500 asylum-seeking families with children, officials say. One of those services will be ensuring asylum seekers reach their desired destination if it is not within the five boroughs.
"With over 50,000 asylum seekers currently in our care and a total of over 81,200 asking us for care since last spring, New York City continues to do more than any other city or level of government to address this national crisis," Adams said in the release. "We continue to meet the needs of people arriving in New York, but as the number of asylum seekers continues to grow, we are in serious need of support from the federal government."
