The parents of a 3-month-old girl are facing charges after her body was discovered in a wooded area in the Highbridge section of the Bronx Sunday night, officials said.
The child, Genevieve Comager, was found unresponsive by police near the Major Deegan Expressway, not far from a homeless shelter where police said she lived with her parents.
Police sources say a family member reached out to the Administration for Children’s Services regarding the child’s safety, which led the NYPD to conduct a search near the wooded area.
On Monday, police charged the father of the child, Damion Comager, 23, with manslaughter, murder and concealment of a human corpse.
The mother, Ivana Paolozzi, 20, has been charged with concealment of a human corse and obstructing governmental administration.
Comager and Paolozzi were walked out of the 44th Precinct station house in handcuffs Monday night.
When asked by reporters what happened, Comager could be heard saying, “I love my daughter, I’m sorry.”
He then added, “I made a mistake.”
The cause of the baby’s death remains under investigation by they city’s medical examiner.
City officials said they are also investigating.
“Our top priority is protecting the safety and well-being of all children in New York City,” the ACS said in a statement. “As soon as this family came to our attention after this tragic matter arose, we launched an immediate investigation with the NYPD.”
