One is dead and three others are injured after a fire broke out in an apartment building in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, police say.
FDNY members responded to the blaze just before 10:30 p.m. Monday night on the 1100 block of Ogden Avenue.
Flames from the 2-alarm fire could be seen billowing from the balcony on the 24th floor of the 26-story high-rise building.
It took over more than an hour for firefighters to get the fire under control, according to witnesses.
“It was a roaring fire. It was a lot of smoke, a lot of flames,” Virginia Lomax, who is a resident in the building, said.
A 46-year-old woman, 15-year-old boy and 11-month-old baby were all taken to Harlem Hospital for smoke inhalation, police said. They are expected to survive.
The 45-year-old man was found unconscious when firefighters arrived. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say that all four victims are a “family.” The 46-year-old woman’s sister told NY1 that the deceased man was her sister’s partner and father to their 11-month-old baby.
“It was very sad and we should do a collection for the family,” Lomax said.
Just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson said her office was aware of the fire and that they were closely monitoring the situation.
In total, 106 fire and EMS members worked on the scene, the FDNY said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Tuesday night.
