A woman was killed on the Cross Bronx Expressway early Tuesday morning after flames engulfed her car following a crash involving three vehicles, including two tractor trailers, police say.
The deadly overnight accident is causing delays in both directions on the highway this morning.
Investigators say a tractor trailer was rear-ended by the woman’s sedan around 12:35 a.m. Tuesday morning on the westbound Cross Bronx near the Major Deegan Expressway.
The woman’s car, which had come to a stop, was then rear-ended by another tractor-trailer, setting her vehicle fully ablaze, police say.
Authorities say the fire then spread to the first tractor trailer as well.
EMS pronounced the woman dead at the scene of the incident.
Both truck drivers suffered minor injuries and are expected to be OK.
The FDNY said the fire department had the blaze under control by 2 a.m.
The crash caused the Cross Bronx to be shut down in both directions for several hours.
