Police are searching for the person who they say pepper sprayed an MTA bus driver in Manhattan in mid-September.
Authorities say a an unidentified individual flagged down a city bus and, unprovoked, discharged pepper spray into the bus driver’s eyes and mouth.
The suspect then fled on a bike westbound on West 162nd St, police say.
Investigators say the victim, a 35-year-old man, experienced burning and irritation around the eyes, and was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in stable condition.
The incident occurred on Sept. 15, according to police.
In a statement, the vice president of TWU Local 100, Donald Yates, decried the incident and called on the city to do more to protect MTA bus drivers.
“This assault on our member is an example why we need full enclosures of the Bus Operator’s compartment. Our members are performing under excruciating circumstances, and need the proper protective equipment that will keep them - and the customers - safe,” Yates said. If this cowardly attack happened while the bus was in motion, customers could have been severely injured in an accident. We want a totally safe environment to work in. If our Bus Operators are not safe, nobody on board is safe.”
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
