It's the end of an era.
“The Phantom of the Opera,” the longest running show on Broadway, will close on Feb. 18, 2023, just weeks after it is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary, according to people associated with the production.
The news was announced to the "Phantom" cast and crew late Friday afternoon during a company meeting led by the show’s resident director Seth Sklar, sources said.
“We are sad to confirm that after 35 years on Broadway, Phantom will play its final performance at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday February 18th, 2023,” said a statement on the “Phantom’s” website. “Tickets are currently on sale for performances through January 22nd, 2023, and we expect the final block of tickets to be placed on sale shortly.”
According to people associated with the production, “Phantom” received help from the government with the Save Our Stages Bill during the pandemic, but that it became too expensive to continue staging it.
The production, which had 13,925 performances, made its first debut on Broadway on Jan. 26, 1988.
