The city’s Department of Correction is launching a new public data portal Monday in hopes of shedding greater light on what occurs in city jails, according to an exclusive preview obtained by NY1.
The portal provides data on the jail population, including the top charges of those currently behind bars which over 1,500 people are facing manslaughter and murder charges, as well as violence statistics that include slashings and stabbings.
It also shows how much of the jail’s staff is currently out sick (12%) or on medically modified duty (8%).
This information comes after months of a protracted staffing crisis on Rikers Island, where hundreds of officers called out sick daily.
The portal, which will be updated monthly, includes data going back to 2018, and officials say it will help the public track their efforts at creating a safer and more humane facility.
The new effort at transparency comes as more advocates, politicians and observers call for a federal takeover of the city’s troubled jail complex.
A dozen people in custody or recently released from custody have died this year.
A federal judge gave the city another chance to turn around Rikers Island earlier this summer, signing off on the Department of Correction’s action plan. They will be back in court in October to discuss the city’s progress.
The new portal can be found on the department’s compliance page.
