BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An NYPD officer shot and injured a knife-wielding man after he charged at a group of officers in Brooklyn on Thursday — and one officer’s hand was cut in the struggle that ensued, authorities said.

Richard Paris, 57, has since been charged with assault on a police officer, attempted assault, menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the incident, police said.

What You Need To Know

  • An NYPD officer shot and injured a knife-wielding man after he charged at a group of officers in Coney Island on Thursday afternoon, Commissioner Keechant Sewell said

  • One officer's hand was cut in the struggle that ensued, Sewell said

  • The man was wearing "thick red gloves" and blocking traffic on West 8th Street when the officer spotted him, according to Sewell

Authorities said the situation began as an officer was walking on West 8th Street, between Neptune and Surf avenues, around 12:55 p.m. and spotted Paris wearing “thick red gloves,” standing next to an SUV and blocking traffic on the street, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference.

The officer began to approach Paris, when he noticed he was also armed with two knives, one of which was 16 inches long, Sewell said.

After noticing the officer, Paris “rushed toward him” with one knife raised, so the officer backed away, the commissioner said.

When a few other officers arrived at the scene and told Paris to drop the knives, he continued to charge at them, Sewell said. One of the officers then fired four shots, hitting the suspect's leg and shoulder.

Paris “continued to fight” after he fell down, leading to an “intense, prolonged struggle” during which one officer’s hand was cut, the commissioner said.

After officers arrested Paris, he was taken to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn with non-life threatening injuries, Sewell said.

The injured officer, identified as John Favale, was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island and released Thursday afternoon.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the man’s motive was, Sewell said. An investigation is ongoing.
