Klein, 31, and three other firefighters were battling a blaze in Canarsie on Sunday when a ceiling partially collapsed, Acting FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said.
The six-year FDNY veteran succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the collapse, the FDNY said. The three other firefighters were taken to nearby hospitals, where they were listed in serious but stable condition as of Tuesday, the department said.
The Rockaway Beach native is survived by his parents, his three sisters and his girlfriend.
Members of the FDNY draped bunting outside of Ladder Company 170 in Canarsie on Monday afternoon as a tribute to Klein.
“Timmy was known here as the Canarsie kid, the golden child,” his captain, Mark Schweighardt, told NY1 on Monday. “That is who Timmy was.”
“When I think about Timmy, I think about the fact that he had a positive impact on every person that he met,” Klein’s cousin, Keith Klein, added.
