A new branch of the New York Public Library is now open on Staten Island.
A grand opening for the Charleston Library, located at 225 Bricktown Way in the Bricktown Commons shopping center, was held Wednesday morning.
According to a press release from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the library features public spaces for community programs, a children’s room, a lounge with computers for teenagers and an adult reading room overlooking Fairview Park, among other amenities.
“Libraries are singularly equipped to provide New York City’s communities with spaces that foster connection and collaboration,” said Anthony W. Marx, president of the New York Public Library. “As we enter a new chapter following a period of so much uncertainty and isolation, this beautiful new library — with its dedicated and knowledgeable staff and vital resources — will reinforce the support and inspiration that New Yorkers need and deserve.”
The branch — which the NYCEDC described as the first Net Zero/Net Positive library in New York City — will have nearly 100% of the energy that the building uses throughout the year provided by solar panels on the roof, according to the NYCEDC. Additionally, the NYCEDC said 63% of the businesses involved with completing the $17 million construction project were owned by minorities or women.
The Charleston Library is the NYPL's 14th branch on Staten Island. The 10,000-square-foot building is the first new branch to open on Staten Island since the Mariners Harbor Library opened in December 2013.
