NEW YORK — The city is investigating the death of a Rikers inmate over the weekend.

The city Department of Correction says Tarz Youngblood, 38, had been in their custody since September.

He was found unresponsive Sunday and pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital. 

The cause of his death is still under investigation.

This is the first reported death of a Rikers inmate this year.

More than a dozen people in Department of Correction custody died in 2021.
