The city will celebrate New York City Football Club’s championship win on the steps of City Hall after the club's first MLS Cup win this past Saturday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday.

The ceremony will take place at City Hall on Tuesday at noon, the mayor said at a news conference on Monday.

“That team just showed so much determination, so much fight, and we are going to celebrate this amazing team, and we’re going to celebrate all they mean to New York City,” de Blasio said. “In this year when we fought back against COVID, when New York City came back, these champions would epitomize the best of New York City.”

NYCFC defetated the Portland Timbers in the high-stakes MLS Cup Final after extra time and penalties. It was NYCFC's first appearance in the final. The club also won the MLS Eastern Conference for the first time in its history.

“This is a historic win for NYCFC and for New York City,” de Blasio added in a statement. “The grit, tenacity, and resiliency this team has displayed this season and in the final game has been an inspiration. On behalf of 8.8 million New Yorkers, congratulations to our champions! We can’t wait to celebrate with you at City Hall.”

Tickets for the celebration are free and registration for the general public will be on a first come, first serve basis. City Hall gates will open for ticket holders at 10 a.m. before the celebration ceremony starts at noon.

“We knew the journey to becoming Champions would not be easy, and we took the responsibility of playing ‘For the City’ seriously,” said NYCFC CEO Brad Sims in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring our City's trophy to the steps of City Hall and celebrate together.”

A live stream of the ceremony will be made available here.
