NEW YORK — A campaign donor to Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin was arrested Friday for allegedly carrying out a straw donor scheme to benefit Benjamin’s campaign for city comptroller.
The campaign donor, 71-year-old Gerald Migdol, is charged with wire fraud and identify theft. He allegedly arranged for campaign donations to be made in the names of others, concealing their true source, in an effort to increase the number of matching funds awarded to Benjamin’s campaign.
The city's matching funds program provides candidates with taxpayer dollars, matching small-dollar donations at a rate of 8-to-1.
Benjamin is accused of no wrongdoing in the federal indictment.
He finished a disappointing fourth in the primary race for comptroller, but was later named lieutenant governor by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
A spokesman for Benjamin's campaign issued a statement after Migdol's arrest on Friday.
"Neither Lt. Gov. Benjamin nor his campaign are being accused of any wrongdoing, and they are prepared to fully cooperate with authorities," the spokesman said. "As soon as the campaign discovered that these contributions were improperly sourced, they donated them to the Campaign Finance Board, pursuant to guidance obtained from the CFB."
