A city panel voted Monday to move the statue of founding father Thomas Jefferson from City Hall to the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side.
The New York City Public Design Commission voted unanimously on Monday to move the statue there on long-term loan.
The statue had been located inside the City Council chambers for more than 100 years. Last month, the commission voted unanimously to remove the statue because of Jefferson's history as a slave owner.
For years, the council’s Black, Latino and Asian caucus called for the statue to be removed, a push that gained even more momentum last year when city leaders began reevaluating statues of historical figures.
The timeline of when the statue will be removed from City Hall is unclear. City Council representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.
