NEW YORK — Memorial services on Friday will commemorate 20 years since 265 people were killed when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Queens.
A memorial service will be held Friday morning in Belle Harbor, with a moment of silence scheduled for 9:17 a.m. before the names of all the victims are read.
Hostos Community College in the Bronx will also host a gathering for victims' family members after the Belle Harbor ceremony.
The plane crashed in Belle Harbor shortly after takeoff from Kennedy Airport on Nov. 12, 2001, claiming the lives of all 260 people on board, along with five people on the ground. The flight was on its way to the Dominican Republic.
Initially, some feared the crash was terrorist-related since it happened about two months after the September 11th attacks. Investigators later determined the plane's broken tail caused the crash.
