Mayor Bill de Blasio announced citywide security measures for the July 4 holiday as the city resumes its annual celebration with Macy’s fireworks, which was largely virtual in 2020.

“We’re so excited about it — it’s going to be amazing,” said de Blasio at a news conference Thursday. “It’s going to be another mark of our rebirth. We want to make sure it goes well. We want to make sure people are safe in every way.”

Viewing points will be available in Manhattan along the FDR Drive and the East River waterfront in Brooklyn, and at Gantry Plaza State Park and Hunter’s Point South Park in Queens.

Both vaccinated and unvaccinated people will be allowed at viewing points, officials said.

“The only stipulation being if you are unvaccinated, it is strongly encouraged that you wear a mask,” said Dan Gross, executive director of Citywide Events.

Law enforcement will not be monitoring masks, according to the NYPD.

“Most people are vaccinated and those that feel uncomfortable are welcome to wear masks if they like it, but that’s not what we’ll be there for,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said.

Officials urged people to take public transportation on Sunday.

“It’s going to be very difficult to get around the city between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.,” Holmes said.

The NYPD will begin closing streets at around 2 p.m., with full closures taking effect at 3 p.m.

Vehicular traffic will also be shut down on the Williamsburg and Queensboro Bridges—a new security measure this year—according to officials.

Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. and access to viewing points will be accessible at 6:30 p.m.

“At long last we are ready for a real celebration to come together with other fellow New Yorkers and have a good time,” said Holmes.

The city will also be offering mobile vaccination sites on July 4 in all five boroughs.
