The Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display is back this year — and it will be the biggest display in the history of the show, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced at a news conference Thursday.
“This is part of the summer of New York City, the rebirth of New York City,” he said. “Why is this possible? Because you got vaccinated.”
Last year, due to COVID-19 concerns, the city held several smaller-than-usual fireworks displays. This year marks a return to a major fireworks show launched from barges on the East River along Midtown Manhattan.
The display will start at about 9:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, said Will Coss, the executive producer of the show. For those viewing by the river, there will be separate sections for vaccinated people and unvaccinated people.
Over 25 minutes, fireworks professionals on five barges will launch 65,000 shells and effects, in line with the theme of “The Hero Within,” as a salute to the resilience of Americans in the face of the pandemic.
For comparison, the 2019 display launched 25,000 shells from four barges by the Brooklyn Bridge.
A national broadcast on NBC will start at 8 p.m. with performances by Coldplay, Reba McEntire, One Republic and other groups.
The Coney Island fireworks display will also return this year, and will start shortly after the Macy’s display ends, at around 10 p.m.
