Andrew Yang attacked rival Eric Adams on Tuesday for his decision to skip a debate that Adams said he’s missing in order to attend a vigil for a child shot and killed in Queens.

What You Need To Know

  • Yang, Adams and three others were invited to debate that isn't part of city-sanctioned series

  • In the Bronx, Yang demanded to know why Adams would miss a face-off ahead of start of early voting

  • In Queens, Adams said he's going to Far Rockaway event and noted he's participating in all three formal debates

Both candidates for mayor had been invited to a WCBS-TV face-off planned for Thursday.

“Can anyone explain why the heck Eric Adams is no-showing this debate?” Yang asked reporters while campaigning in Co-op City in the Bronx. “I mean, it’s really beyond me. New Yorkers deserve better. They deserve a mayor who’s going to show up. They deserve a candidate who’s going to show up.”

Adams said he was instead participating a vigil to remember Justin Wallace, the 10-year-old killed this past weekend in Far Rockaway.

The WCBS debate is not among the three official, Campaign Finance Board-sanctioned face-offs. Adams’ campaign said he had not confirmed he would attend.

WCBS confirmed that Adams said he is no longer debating. Yang, Kathryn Garcia, Scott Stringer and Maya Wiley will participate. The other Democratic candidates for mayor were not invited.

Adams attended the first two CFB-sponsored debates and is attending the third and final one on June 16.

“Yesterday, I went out to the Rockaways and I met with Justin’s mom. And when I was walking the streets, the people asked — they’re in a lot of pain — we’re holding a vigil tomorrow with Justin’s family, with the neighbors there,” Adams said Tuesday outside Queens Borough Hall.

Though a flier is circulating for a Wednesday vigil co-hosted by the Sheltering Arms and Rock Safe Streets community groups, the Adams campaign says the candidate misspoke and is attending a different event Thursday in Far Rockaway.

Yang, once solidly in the lead in the race for mayor, has recently been targeting Adams for criticism. Adams leads the Democratic primary field in an exclusive Spectrum News NY1/Ipsos poll released on Monday
