Passover begins at sundown Saturday. The eight-day holiday marks the Jewish exodus from Egypt and freedom from slavery.
Many Jewish families celebrate by holding a seder -- which is the retelling of that story.
They also refrain from eating leavened bread for the entirety of Passover, instead eating matzah.
Mayor Bill de Blasio took to twitter to wish a safe and happy holiday to all Jewish New Yorkers. He said the passover tradition of honoring courage in the face of fear takes on even greater meaning coming out of this turbulent year.
A Zeesen Pesach to all of our Jewish brothers and sisters!

Passover honors strength and courage in the face of fear. That takes on even greater meaning as we come out of this turbulent year. @NYCFirstLady and I wish all who celebrate a safe, happy holiday. pic.twitter.com/hsqa7KxlaT
