NEW YORK — The city plans to make 181st Street in Washington Heights a "bus only" road in the spring as part of a pilot program to speed up bus service.

Under the program, 181st Street will be reserved for the exclusive use of buses and emergency vehicles between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway.

Merchandise delivery vehicles would be allowed to enter.

Private cars could enter to drop off passengers but will be required to exit on the next street that allows a right turn.

The city Department of Transportation says the five bus routes that travel along 181st Street circulate at an average speed of only 3.7 mph.
