NEW YORK — Two people were injured after being trapped by a heavy fire Saturday in a public housing building in Manhattan, the FDNY said.
Firefighters responded around 3:30 p.m. to the blaze on the 16th floor of the Clinton Houses on 1738 Lexington Avenue in East Harlem.
The FDNY managed to get the fire under control around 4:20 p.m.
One of the victims was transported to Harlem Hospital while the other was taken to Metropolitan Hospital, the FDNY said.
The extent of their injuries and their identities are not confirmed at this time.
No injuries to firefighters or anyone else were reported, according to the FDNY.
Neighbor Amir Perkins says he has known the couple his entire life.
"Tears ran down my eyes," Perkins said. "They've been here a long time. They've been here over 55 years, just like my mother. So it hurts."
The cause of the fire is not known as of this writing, but fire department officials said smoke detectors appeared to be present.
