The FDNY is mourning the death of the first active-duty firefighter from complications with COVID-19.
Sixty-one-year-old Firefighter Joseph Ferrugia was a 30-year veteran of the department, joining in 1990.
He was assigned to the Ladder Company 142 in Queens.
The FDNY says he was cited twice in his career for bravery, and he served during the 9/11 attacks.
In a statement, the president of the FDNY-Uniformed Firefighters Association said, in part: "We stand 20,000 strong with the Ferrugia family, now and in the difficult times ahead. We will never forget his thirty years of service to this department and this city, may he rest in peace. Never forget.”
