NEW YORK — Former New York City mayoral candidate George McDonald has died.

McDonald died Tuesday after battling cancer, the Doe Fund announced.

Before running for mayor in 2013, McDonald was best known as the founder and long-time president of the homeless advocacy nonprofit, the Doe Fund. That organization has helped homeless New Yorkers find employment and affordable housing since 1985. 

George McDonald was 76 years old.
