Union Square Park could be getting a $100 million makeover, expanding the park by almost two acres for folks on foot.
The Union Square Partnership, a nonprofit that supports the area, released a plan that would increase the pedestrian space.
The park would grow by a little over two acres to the surrounding building edges.
This would increase public space by 33%, the group says.
The group wants to transform 14th Street into a pedestrian-friendly transit way, pedestrianize Broadway, add streetscape elements including new lighting, trash containers, permanent farmers market stalls, new subway entrances and pedestrian-friendly “micro parks."
It won't be a quick change, though; the expansion could take 10 to 20 years to complete after undergoing a review and finding money to fund it.
