NEW YORK — A Mickey Mantle baseball card from 1952 has set a new record, selling at auction for $5.2 million.
The Topps card shatters the record set just this past August by a Mike Trout rookie card that sold for less than $4 million.
Actor Rob Gough bought the card, which former NFL player Evan Mathis sold for less than $3 million in 2018.
The card is considered valuable and rare because 1952 was Topps' first annual set and because they dumped thousands of cards into the Hudson River in 1960 after over-production.
The record may not last long because there are three other Mantle cards in existence valued at more than $10 million each.
