A 7-year-old girl is dead after being struck by an armored truck in Brooklyn on Monday, the NYPD said.
Police said 7-year-old Sami Ali was struck at the intersection of Bay 23rd Street and Bath Avenue at around 4:25 p.m.
While the crash happened just a block away from the NYPD’s 62nd Precinct, emergency crews were not able to save the girl.
She was transported to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn, where she was pronounced dead.
Parents at a park at the same intersection where the girl died said that she frequently attended the park.
“She came here every other day,” said one parent. “Her family lives around the block from here.”
The same parent also said she believed the driver did not see the little girl as she crossed the street and was hit by the driver as they made a left-hand turn onto Bath Ave from Bay 23rd Street.
The NYPD said the operator of the armored truck, owned by GuardaWorld, stayed at the scene and was not facing any criminal charges in the case as of Monday night.
“It is very scary, you know, because as a parent, I can’t imagine going through this,” said “Sarah,” a mother who also brings her children to the same park near the scene.
NY1 reached out to GardaWorld for comment on Monday but had not received a response by 10 p.m.
It is estimated that an armored truck can weigh at least 12,000 pounds before cargo is added and the weight of employees is factored in.
