The New York Mets and Miami Marlins on Thursday evening took the field for a moment of silence, then left the field in an apparent boycott of their game in solidarity with protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.
At about 7:10 p.m., the scheduled first pitch at Citi Field in Flushing, Queens, the Mets’ starting lineup — led by outfielders Dominic Smith and Billy Hamilton, who are both Black — took the field. The Mets and Marlins then observed a 42-second moment of silence — a nod to Jackie Robinson, who is slated to be honored Friday across Major League Baseball — and walked off the field, with Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson leaving a Black Lives Matter shirt on top of home plate.
The game has been postponed, according to SNY, the team's broadcast partner, as well as other published reports. It’s not clear when the game, the last between New York and Miami this season, will be rescheduled for.
Six other MLB games were postponed Thursday after three were postponed the day before.
MLB players’ actions came after the Milwaukee Bucks and the NBA took the lead, postponing playoff games Wednesday and Thursday after the shooting. NBA players voted Thursday to resume the season. In a statement, the NBA said that the league was "hopeful to resume games either Friday or Saturday."
Several other leagues, including the NHL and the WNBA, postponed all of their games Thursday. The NHL postponed all playoff games scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Those postponements included Game 3 of the Islanders' playoff series against the Flyers, which was scheduled for Thursday night.
Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, was shot multiple times in the back by police Sunday while he reached into the SUV where his three children were sitting.
The shooting was captured on cellphone video and has ignited new protests over racial injustice in several cities. Blake is paralyzed from the waist down, his family said.
Police officers unsuccessfully used a Taser on Blake and a knife was found on the driver’s-side floorboard of his vehicle, authorities said. It’s unclear if the responding officers knew about the knife before the shooting.
