NATIONWIDE — Kerry Washington kicked off the third night of the Democratic National Convention with a poignant memory of her middle school government class.
On Wednesday night, the “Scandal” actress delivered a powerful address where she recalled learning about the Constitution of the United States during eighth grade.
“When I was in 7th or 8th grade we memorized the preamble of the constitution and I've never forgotten it," Washington said. "The first 15 words of our constitution are, 'We the people, of the United States in order to form a more perfect union ... we say more perfect because our union is not without flaws.”
“When our constitution was written, women couldn't vote. Black people were considered three-fifths of a human being, but therein lies the work. No one is perfect. Nothing is,” the actress continued.
While the 43-year-old didn’t call out her teacher by name, it turned out she didn’t have to—an ecstatic Tiffany Bluemle, Washington’s actual middle school teacher, was watching the speech from home.
“I nearly fell off the couch when @kerrywashington mentioned her 8th grade constitutional law class,” Bluemle wrote on Twitter. “I was her teacher. And so proud of her professional accomplishments and political advocacy.”
Soon after, Kerry also took to Twitter to express her gratitude to Bluemle.
“OMG!!!! Hi,” the “Little Fires Everywhere” actress wrote. “Thank you for watching!!!!! And thank you for inspiring me and sooo many other students!!!”
Both women are active in politics — Bleumle is currently running for State Representative in Vermont’s Chittenden County, while Washington has been a longtime advocate for victims of sexual and domestic violence.
In a sweet nod to their exchange, Bleumle proudly updated her Twitter bio to read:
“Candidate, VT State Representative (Chittenden 6-5), Founder of Change The Story VT, and proud former teacher of Kerry Washington and other amazing women."
