The deadline for uninsured New Yorkers to enroll in the state’s health insurance program amid the coronavirus pandemic has been extended into August, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.
The deadline for the special enrollment program was extended 30 days, through August 15. Those without insurance can apply through New York state’s marketplace, or directly through insurers.
The extension comes in an effort by the state to expand health care access as the COVID-19 crisis continues.
"While we're continuing to move in the right direction, we know we're not out of the woods yet and by extending the open enrollment period we're making sure New Yorkers who need affordable health care coverage can get it and help keep themselves and their families safe,” Cuomo said in a statement.
According to Cuomo, New Yorkers no longer getting health insurance through their job can apply within 60 days of losing that coverage. People who have lost income may be eligible for Medicaid and Child Health Plus, among other plans.
A rule the governor announced in March, that New York insurers must waive any cost-sharing associated with coronavirus testing, remains in effect.
