Some New Yorkers spent their Independence Day continuing the fight to end racism and police brutality.
Dozens gathered In Manhattan's Union Square, with many questioning "whose freedom is actually being celebrated?"
Some protesters pointed out that on the nation's first Independence Day, Black people in America were still enslaved.
"Today is not our holiday, so same purpose as before: Letting people know that slaves are coming in ships after July 4 1776, and the Trail of Tears happened in the 1800s," said one protester. "We're still here. We're demanding to defend and abolish the police and the Department of Corrections, and having that money sent into our communities which are needed."
Protesters are hoping to continue the momentum of racial justice started by the widespread protests organized in response to the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
