NEW YORK (SPECTRUM NEWS) - With the COVID-19 mandatory shutdown in effect, the curtains on Broadway will not rise until at least January of next year. But if you’re looking for an instant fix, you can check out one of the world’s hottest shows right in the comfort of your own home starting on Friday.

What You Need To Know

  • "Hamilton" Premieres on Disney+ this Friday, July 3rd.

  • The film is a recording of the original Broadway production and features the original Broadway cast including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda in the title role.

  • The production was filmed in front of a live audience, captured over the course of three days, using multiple cameras.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking award winning phenomenon “Hamilton” is set to play on Disney+ just in time for the holiday weekend.

Frank DiLella: How excited are you to share "Hamilton" with the world?

Lin-Manuel Miranda: We've had five productions in the States, one in London, and still more people will see this show next weekend than have probably ever seen it. That's the weird scale of theater versus film.

The filmed version of the stage production was captured over the course of three days. "Hamilton" Director Thomas Kail is at the helm.

"There are so many people that want to come to the theater that can't get there. It's too expensive. It's too far away. And we wanted to lower the barrier to entry. Maybe there's more people like us who don't know that theater is for them. And if this can start to promote a conversation and that kind of access can create me theater goers, a new citizens of theater, then maybe it's worth the conversation," Kail said.

"Hamilton" was originally supposed to be released in theaters nationwide in October of 2021, but with the coronavirus pandemic the "Hamilton" team agreed to stream the film early. The musical stars the original Broadway company including Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry.

"I miss theater. I miss it. And we need it right now. This wonderful streaming opportunity allows theater to heal us in the ways that we need," Goldsberry said.

And with "Hamilton" taking to small screens across the country and around the world, one can only think, the time for this story, a story about a dreamer who was marginalized, is right now.

Frank DiLella:
Does "Hamilton" take on new meaning now, especially with what's going on in our world today?

Lin-Manuel Miranda: "Hamilton" takes on new meaning every day because the world changes around it. We haven't changed the lyric of the show. And yet I think because it brushes up against the contradictions and origins of our country, different things resonate in different ways.

And the room where it happens will be your room on July 3 when you can catch "Hamilton" streaming on Disney+.
