Macy's put on the first of what it says will be several small, unannounced fireworks displays ahead of the Fourth of July, despite growing complaints from New Yorkers who say the fireworks are adding another unnecessary level of stress on residents who've been at the mercy of a barrage of illegal fireworks once the sun goes down.
Around 8 P.M., the city announced that the fireworks will take place between 9 and 10 P.M., and may be seen or heard in parts of Long Island City, Roosevelt Island, and along the East River in Manhattan.
The city also said the fireworks may be seen or heard in parts of southern Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Social-distancing measures were in place in both situations, according to city officials.
The five-minute displays will eventually be pieced together for a July Fourth broadcast from the top of the Empire State Building.
Since the original announcement of the altered fireworks display this year, the city has received blowback from residents and local leaders alike due to concerns about the effect of fireworks on military veterans who suffer from PTSD.
The Department of Veterans Affairs says it will conduct specific outreach to veterans' groups to ensure they know the locations of the Macy's fireworks.
