NEW YORK - Young adults, some who had little chance of making it to their teenage years, marked a special occasion this week with a Manhattan medical center.
Forty-five kids who were treated for cancer and blood disorders at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center celebrated a virtual high school graduation Thursday morning.
Medical staff at the Manhattan center congratulated students on overcoming their obstacles and encouraged them to aim high.
Luke Weber, 18, was one of them.
The Upper West Side resident was three years old when he was diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer.
He beat it not once but three times at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
"I'm just so grateful that I can be here because I know so many, so many patients were not so lucky," Weber said.
Weber is off to Rice University in the fall.
He plans to study history.
