NEW YORK - Immigrants who are not U.S. citizens but have legal working papers would be allowed to vote in city elections under a bill that's headed to the City Council this week.

The Daily News says the measure would change the City Charter to give voting rights to people with green cards and non-citizen work authorizations.

Those immigrants could then vote in local races like the ones for mayor and comptroller.

Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez is sponsoring the bill, and says nearly two dozen Council members support it.

If the bill passes, voting rights would be granted to anwyhere from 500,000 to one million New Yorkers.
