NEW YORK - Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a plan to bring eight new tracks to Penn Station.

The tracks will help increase the transit hub's capacity by 40 percent.

While work is underway to move both Amtrak and the Long Island Rail Road to the Moynihan train hall after it opens in December of this year.

Cuomo says the extra track space is needed to help ease growing congestion. The governor has said he wants more people to be able to rely on mass transit.

"We believe the best alternative is to expand by acquiring the block south of Penn Station and increasing the footprint that way and making it a viable system once again," Cuomo added.

The cost and timeline of the project are not yet known.
