The NYPD says New York City says the number of reported hate crimes rose more than 19 percent in 2019 compared to 2018, fueled by a rise in reported anti-Semitic crimes.
According to the NYPD, 423 hate crimes were reported between January 1 and December 30 of this year, up from 354 in 2018.
The NYPD says reports of anti-Semitic crimes specifically rose by 24 percent, from 185 in 2018 to 229 between January 1 and December 30 of this year. Those 229 crimes are more than 54 percent of all hate crimes reported this year, according to the NYPD.
Reports of gender-related hate crimes nearly doubled from 7 to 13, reported hate crimes related to sexual orientation jumped to 54 from 45, and reported hate crimes against whites rose to 29 from 17, according to the NYPD. Reports of religious-related hate crimes also nearly doubled, rising to 15 from 8, the NYPD says.
