NEW YORK - Some good news if you've been grumbling about the L Train: Governor Cuomo says there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
At a news conference at the Bedford Avenue subway station Sunday, Cuomo said the first phase of construction on the project is finished, ahead of schedule and on budget.
Work on the next phase begins immediately, with the entire project expected to be finished in April of 2020, three months earlier than expected.
Cuomo said he never believed the overhaul of the L Train would require a total shutdown. Before the governor stepped in, the MTA spent years holding hearings and suggesting service shutdown plans.
“Newsflash: innovation works, new technology works, finding faster, better ways works and it's a lesson for the whole MTA," Cuomo said at the news conference.
The work completed on the Canarsie tunnel includes new fire-resistant cables, new wall structure and new tracks.
Extensive work was required on tunnel after it sustained damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
