The wife of famed artist Peter Max has taken her own life, according to police.
Officials say 52-year-old Mary Max was found dead in their Riverside Drive apartment on the Upper West side Sunday night.
She was married to the pop artist for over 20 years.
Mary Max was the artist’s second wife.
She made headlines four years ago when she asked a judge to appoint a guardian to oversee her husband's business, as he fell deeper into dementia.
At the time, Peter’s son by his first marriage and Mary Max accused each other of mistreating the artist.
Peter maintained that he loved his wife.
A judge ordered that he be returned to her care at their home, and appointed a guardian to oversee his business and personal matters.
But litigation continued, and last month, the New York Times published a detailed account of the artist, and his condition, claiming he has not been painting works sold under his name.
We are still waiting to hear from the family's representatives.
