NEW YORK - A new state law hits the books Monday requiring all smoke detectors sold in New York to have a non-removable battery good for at least 10 years or be hard-wired to buildings.
State officials say these types of smoke detectors are safer since the batteries don't have to be replaced periodically.
Smoke detectors that are currently powered by removable batteries don't have to be replaced.
Stores will also be able to sell smoke detectors with removable batteries that were ordered before Monday.
