Twenty five thousand runners swarmed Prospect Park early Sunday morning, lacing up sneakers and warming their bodies to run the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon.
“Today we are making history,” said Jim Heim of New York Road Runners. “We are connecting prospect park with Central Park In a major event. It’s never happened before.”
The 13.1 mile course took runners from Prospect Park, up Flatbush Avenue, over the Manhattan Bridge, up the FDR, and through Times Square to a finish in Central Park near Tavern on the Green.
The race is a feast for the eyes and a challenge for the legs.
“I think the first part was really hard where everyone was really cold, everyone was shivering. But then when we started, we warmed up and it was fun,” said one runner.
All who were asked said it was a difficult course, but it proved no impossible feat for one pregnant mother.
“I am with my baby! Amazing, amazing. I enjoyed it so much and I feel amazing,” said the ambitious mother-to-be.
About 90 countries were represented among this year’s runners and supporters from around the world cheered them on, too. One group NY1 spoke with was from Sydney, Australia.
“It’s amazing. I feel really lucky,” said the tourists taking in the sights. “We’re not running, but it doesn’t matter. We’re cheering.”
Completing such a daunting run is certainly something to cheer about.
