Students in Queens are putting their Braille skills to the test in a competition designed just for them.

Saturday the Department of Education's “Educational Vision Services Program,” hosted their fourth annual Braille challenge for students from 1st to 12th grade that are either blind or visually impaired. The competition was held at the John F. Kennedy Jr. school in Elmhurst. It was set up in a spelling bee like format, with spelling, speed and accuracy challenges.

The event gave more than 40 students from all five boroughs the chance to be on par with other kids.

Gregory Santamor, Director of the program at the Department of Education says “they should have every opportunity to use their Braille on a daily basis and for them to understand that their getting the same opportunities as their peers.”

A first, second and third place winner was chosen for the five different challenges. Those students walked away with gift cards and games.
